Although children typically begin to express themselves with words between 12-18months of age, you can know their wants, needs, thoughts and feelings much sooner than that through the use of the Baby Signs® Program.
The Baby Signs® Program teaches babies to use simple, easy-to-do gestures for communicating with their parents/grandparents/caregivers to aid the parent-infant communication process. By teaching your baby to sign, you allow them to share their needs, thoughts, feelings and memories before they even have the words for them. Your baby will no longer have to point, grunt and cry to express themselves but instead can now use their hands, face and body to share their world. The Baby Signs® Program is not difficult to teach or learn for both parents and their babies. In fact, it's very natural and will build on what you probably already do with your baby. If you have ever taught your baby to wave "bye-bye" or shake their head for "yes" or "no" then you're teaching your baby to sign! Just think about it, parents and babies have been signing to each other for years. We've also seen babies who have developed their signs for gestures to represent concepts. Many parents who sign or make gestures while singing nursery rhymes have also taught a sign or two to their baby. By modeling these signs, you are teaching your baby to sign and the Baby Signs® Program will help you build on what you and your baby already do naturally!
